UPDF Engineers Have Completed Kanungu New Bridge That Ends Years of Isolation and Unlocks Trade Opportunities

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Engineers Brigade has completed a vital bridge in Kanungu District, bringing long-awaited relief to residents who have for years struggled with poor transport links and limited access to essential services.

The newly built bridge connects Nyamizi Cell in Kihanda Sub-county to Kakoni LC1 in Nyarugunda Parish, opening a safe and reliable route for farmers, traders, school children and patients. The project, valued at 50 million shillings, was implemented as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita community support activities.

For a long time, people in the area faced serious challenges moving farm produce such as coffee, bananas and livestock to markets. During rainy seasons, crossing the hilly terrain became dangerous, cutting off families from schools, health centres and trading points.

Maj. Albert Mukama, who led the UPDF Engineers team in the Kigezi region, said the bridge was built using locally available timber and stones to keep costs low while ensuring strength and durability. He explained that although the design is simple, it meets professional military engineering standards and can safely support heavy vehicles.

According to Mukama, the bridge has solved a long-standing transport problem and is expected to serve the community for at least two decades if well maintained. He noted that the UPDF focused on creating a practical solution that responds directly to the daily needs of residents.

Local leaders welcomed the project with praise. Area Chairperson Kintu Henry described the bridge as a major safety improvement, especially for school-going children who previously risked their lives using the old crossing.

UPDF Director of Civil-Military Cooperation, Brig. Gen. Micheal Kibuye, commended the Engineers Brigade for completing the work in less than a month. He said the bridge is part of wider efforts by the army to support civilian communities through infrastructure development under the Tarehe Sita outreach programme.

The bridge is expected to be officially handed over to the community on January 6, 2026, marking a new chapter of improved movement, trade and access to services for the people of Kanungu District.
