Uganda recently stood before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Gambia, confidently asserting its dedication to democratic governance, human rights, justice, and improving its citizens’ lives. Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, representing Uganda, used this platform to detail the country’s positive strides in democracy, fair representation, access to justice, and efforts to reduce poverty.
Ambassador Otengo informed the delegates that Uganda successfully conducted its 2026 General Elections in a peaceful and orderly manner, following national laws. She highlighted that a diverse range of 12 political parties participated in these elections across various levels of government, including presidential, parliamentary, and local offices. Uganda, she explained, is actively working to foster a “politics of interest” over “politics of identity.” This approach aims to strengthen national unity, cohesion, and political stability within its multi-party system.
Uganda has made significant efforts to ensure all voices are heard through inclusive democratic representation. The Ambassador noted that leadership opportunities are specifically provided for special interest groups, such as women, youth, workers, persons with disabilities, and even older persons. She pointed out that elderly individuals now hold positions at parliamentary levels and within other government structures, ensuring their active participation.
In the realm of governance and justice, Ambassador Otengo affirmed Uganda’s intensified efforts to boost accountability and streamline justice administration. This has been achieved through expanding judicial services and building more court infrastructure across the country. These improvements have led to a notable reduction in the backlog of court cases, from 48% down to 24.2%. Furthermore, the government has increased its financial support and investment in the Uganda Human Rights Commission, reinforcing its commitment to human rights oversight.
The Ambassador also outlined various government initiatives designed to improve household incomes and ensure broader economic inclusion for all Ugandans.
