Ugandan Brilliance Takes Flight: St. Gracious Top Student Embarks on Global Chemistry Olympiad Journey in Moscow, Igniting National Pride and Scientific Aspirations

Uganda is proudly sending one of its brightest young minds, Atine Solomon Jr, a Senior Six student from St. Gracious Secondary School, to represent the nation at the esteemed International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow, Russia. This significant global competition, set to take place from April 15 to 23, 2026, marks a proud moment for Ugandan education and science. Atine is expected to depart on April 14.

At a special ceremony held in Lira, Dr. Andrew Odur, the Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, officially wished Atine well on his journey. Dr. Odur took the opportunity to commend the leadership of St. Gracious Secondary School, particularly its founder, Dr. Patrick Olet, for their remarkable efforts in transforming academic performance. He urged all students to maintain focus, discipline, and a clear vision in their pursuit of academic excellence.

Inspired by the legacies of scientific giants like Isaac Newton and space pioneers such as Neil Armstrong, Dr. Odur stressed that unwavering determination and hard work are fundamental to achieving success. He underscored the critical importance of science in addressing real-life challenges, citing breakthroughs in medical fields like dialysis and intricate surgeries. Dr. Odur emphasized that robust science education is key to national development and expressed his firm belief that the school would continue to produce highly skilled professionals, including doctors, thereby strengthening Uganda’s human resource base. He also encouraged students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship, highlighting the wider opportunities available in the private sector beyond government employment.

Mr. Martin Ojok Anyuru, the school principal, reiterated the school’s commitment to academic excellence. He attributed St. Gracious Secondary School’s consistent rise in academic achievements to strong leadership and a forward-thinking vision. He noted the school’s impressive record of high academic performance in recent years, showcasing its dedication to nurturing talented individuals.

Atine’s participation in this international chemistry Olympiad is more than just a personal achievement; it symbolizes Uganda’s growing presence on the global scientific stage and serves as a powerful inspiration for students nationwide to pursue their academic dreams with passion and determination.
