Uganda’s Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Sam Engola, has committed to working much more closely with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This strong partnership aims to significantly improve how Uganda manages its refugee population and responds to various humanitarian emergencies across the country.
The commitment was made during a recent meeting where IOM representatives met with Minister Engola to congratulate him on his appointment. During their discussion, IOM highlighted its current efforts across Uganda in managing refugees and responding to crises.
IOM firmly restated its dedication to supporting the Ugandan government. This support includes responding to urgent situations like floods, droughts, landslides, and other climate-related disasters. The organization is also actively addressing the ongoing food crisis in Karamoja and parts of Northern Uganda, while stressing the importance of preparing for the upcoming El Niño weather patterns.
IOM pledged to continue offering expert technical assistance and quick humanitarian help to the government. They are particularly keen on supporting efforts to fight famine in affected regions and to develop stronger policies and better ways to coordinate humanitarian actions.
Minister Engola encouraged IOM to work hand-in-hand with the government and other aid partners, especially in tackling the critical issue of food shortages across the country. This renewed collaboration promises a more unified and effective approach to humanitarian challenges in Uganda.
