Uganda has taken a bold step forward in the fight against HIV, becoming one of the first nations globally to introduce Lenacapavir PrEP, a revolutionary new injectable drug for HIV prevention. This powerful medicine, administered only twice a year, promises to be a game-changer in making prevention much easier for people compared to daily pills. The launch, led by Uganda’s Health Minister, marks a significant moment in the country’s ambitious goal to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Uganda has already achieved remarkable progress in tackling HIV. The number of new infections has dramatically fallen from 96,000 in 2010 to an estimated 37,000 for 2025. Furthermore, an impressive 1.4 million people are currently receiving life-saving treatment, covering over 98 percent of those who need it.
However, despite these encouraging achievements and the excitement around the new drug, a serious challenge remains. The Health Minister warned that HIV is still a major threat. A staggering 150,000 people in Uganda are unaware of their HIV status, meaning they could unknowingly spread the virus and miss out on vital treatment. Even more concerning, approximately 100 new HIV infections occur every single day, with a significant number affecting young people, especially adolescent girls and young women.
It is crucial to remember that Lenacapavir is a tool for prevention, not a cure. The Health Minister emphasized that everyone must continue to get tested regularly, practice safe sex, and stay vigilant against new infections. While this new injectable offers immense hope, it underscores the ongoing need for widespread awareness, testing, and responsible prevention efforts across all communities. Experts confirm the drug is backed by strong science and efforts are underway to make more affordable versions widely available, but the fight against HIV requires continuous collective action.
