A devastating nighttime fire has left more than two hundred students at Ntenungi Secondary School in Kamwenge District without shelter or belongings. The blaze, which erupted at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, completely gutted the boys’ dormitory, affecting at least 215 learners within the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement. Beyond the physical destruction of the building, the fire consumed essential personal items, including bedding, clothing, and critical academic documents such as result slips for Senior Four candidates.
The school administration, led by Head Teacher Burnnet Niwagaba, has expressed deep concern that the fire may have been intentionally set by unknown individuals. While official investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause, the incident has dealt a massive blow to an institution already reeling from financial instability. Ntenungi Secondary School, which serves a large population of over one thousand students from both the refugee and host communities, recently faced a significant setback when international donor support for teacher salaries was withdrawn, leaving the school to rely almost entirely on local parent contributions.
In the wake of this catastrophe, the school is struggling to provide temporary accommodation and basic necessities for the displaced students. The administration is urgently appealing to government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and the general public for immediate assistance. Support is needed in the form of scholastic materials, mattresses, and emergency shelter to ensure that the affected students can continue their education during this incredibly difficult period.
