Lira, Uganda – St. Gracious Primary School in Lira has distanced itself from a teacher recently arrested over an alleged bribery attempt involving an official from the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
The school’s administration said the accused teacher, identified as Awoko Lavoiser, was not under their control at the time of the incident since he had been officially deployed by UNEB to serve as an examination scout in Oyam District.
In a statement issued to the press, the school’s Principal, Mr. Leo Elem, dismissed circulating claims that the teacher was acting on behalf of St. Gracious. He explained that the teacher had been released to UNEB on October 31, 2025, under the Board’s supervision and directives.
“Once a teacher is handed over to UNEB for examination duties, the school no longer controls their actions. Any misconduct that occurs during that period is strictly a matter between the teacher and UNEB,” Mr. Elem stated.
Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects, including Awoko, for their alleged role in the bribery scheme, which reportedly targeted a UNEB scout. The attempt to bribe an official charged with protecting the integrity of exams is considered a serious offence.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and the suspects remain in police custody as UNEB works closely with law enforcement to handle the matter.
St. Gracious School emphasized that it remains committed to maintaining its reputation for discipline and integrity and that it had no role in the alleged bribery incident.
