Somalia has registered another major step in its integration into the East African Community after the Speaker of its Parliament, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, officially took over as Chairperson of the EAC Bureau of Speakers.
His assumption of office comes at a crucial moment, as Uganda puts the final touches on its preparations to host the East African Community Games set for December 2025. During the handover, Kenya’s Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi, praised Uganda for its readiness to welcome athletes and officials from across the region, noting that the country had managed to prepare effectively despite the limited time available.
Uganda’s Speaker, Anita Among, used the occasion to highlight the importance of stronger regional cooperation. She urged EAC partner states to fully implement the laws and resolutions passed by the East African Legislative Assembly, saying meaningful progress can only be achieved when every member state turns agreed policies into real action.
The upcoming EAC Games are expected to promote unity, cultural understanding, and economic cooperation among member countries. For Uganda, hosting the event is a chance to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening regional integration and supporting the EAC’s long-term goal of a more united and prosperous East Africa.
Somalia’s rise to this leadership position marks a turning point in its EAC journey. Since officially joining the community in March 2024, Somalia has taken an active role in regional programmes, particularly in trade, infrastructure development, and parliamentary affairs. The country has already elected nine representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly and continues to deepen its involvement in community activities.
Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur’s new role signals Somalia’s determination to contribute meaningfully to the region’s political and economic future, while also giving the country a stronger voice in shaping decisions that affect the entire community.
