There is growing tension among government workers in Kwania District, Uganda, especially those involved in a program to provide cattle to residents of Abwong Parish. They are facing serious accusations of corruption and unfair practices in choosing who gets the cows.
Residents claim that local leaders, including the chairperson and members of the Parish Development Committee, did not follow the rules. Instead of selecting the required ten beneficiaries from some areas, they reportedly chose only four. These allegations have caused significant fear among some government officials, with reports suggesting that some are even considering leaving their jobs due to the rising distrust from the community they serve.
Julius Peter Ongom, the local chairperson for Akali Sub-county, confirmed that these complaints from residents are real and have strained relationships, making it hard for officials to do their work effectively.
Kwania District’s top leader, George Kakoma Akacha, has urged all government workers to carry out their duties honestly and without favouritism. He stressed the vital importance of following government rules strictly when implementing programs. This, he explained, is crucial to prevent accusations of corruption and ensure that services are delivered fairly to everyone. Akacha emphasized that properly running government initiatives is key to maintaining public confidence and making sure that those who are supposed to benefit actually receive the help.
Despite the worries, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Kwania District, Robert Okwanga Alem, stated that his office has not received any official resignations from government workers because of this issue. However, he strongly reminded all civil servants involved in government programs to always follow the established procedures and guidelines. Okwanga revealed that the concerns about the cattle restocking program have already been reported to the Central Police Station in Kwania, and a full investigation is now underway.
