Kwania, Uganda – In a determined effort to protect Lake Kwania’s vital fish stocks, Ugandan authorities have seized and destroyed illegal fishing equipment valued at over Shs180 million. The joint operation, involving the Kwania District Fisheries Department and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Marine Unit, targeted harmful fishing practices that are rapidly emptying the lake of its fish.
During a month-long crackdown, officials impounded 5,780 illegal nets, including monofilament nets, undersized nets, and specialized nets used for catching silverfish. These types of gear are banned because they indiscriminately catch young fish or damage the lake’s delicate ecosystem, threatening the future of fishing for everyone.
Lieutenant Colonel Jackson Nuwagaba, commander of the UPDF Marine Unit, applauded local fishing committees for their crucial support in guiding the operation and identifying those involved in illegal activities. He issued a stern warning to anyone still using or hiding illegal gear: surrender it willingly now, or face immediate confiscation and destruction as enforcement efforts continue.
Ronald Otim, Kwania District Fisheries Officer, urged fishermen to cooperate with their leaders and follow fishing regulations. He emphasized that complying with the rules is not just about legality; it’s about safeguarding their own livelihoods and avoiding significant financial losses from having their illegal gear seized and destroyed.
During a recent meeting, chairpersons from the district’s 11 fishing landing sites made strong commitments. They resolved to fully ban monofilament nets, take legal action against offenders, and immediately destroy any illegal fishing gear found, often in front of its owners for transparency. They also pledged to intensify joint patrols across the entire lake. The meeting concluded with a powerful appeal for all parties involved in the fisheries sector to work together to eliminate illegal fishing and ensure Lake Kwania’s fish resources can thrive for future generations. This unified commitment aims to improve how the lake’s fish are managed and ensure everyone follows the law, securing a healthier future for Lake Kwania.
