In Kaberamaido, Uganda, a senior local official is speaking out against corruption that threatens to undermine a key government program designed to lift people out of poverty. Arikos Peter, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) for Kaberamaido, is urging everyone involved to be much more careful and responsible when carrying out the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Mr. Peter’s main concern is about people illegally demanding money (extortion) from those who are supposed to benefit from the PDM. He is also worried about “ghost beneficiaries” – fake names or people who don’t exist, but are listed to receive money. This means public funds meant for improving the lives of ordinary citizens are being stolen and misused.
The ARDC emphasized that the PDM is a crucial plan to help poor households improve their incomes and quality of life. If corruption, like extortion and fake beneficiaries, is allowed to continue, it will stop the program from achieving its good goals. He called for a strong crackdown on anyone involved in these dishonest practices.
It is vital that all funds allocated through the PDM reach the real, struggling families who need them the most. Mr. Peter’s call is a powerful reminder that we must all work together to protect public money and ensure that development programs truly serve the community.
