In Alebtong District, Uganda, a remarkable change is sweeping through communities. Local leaders confirm that the area is undergoing major social and economic improvements, thanks to various government initiatives strongly supported by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. These efforts, focusing on farming, schools, health, and creating wealth, are steadily increasing family incomes and improving services for everyone.
A key part of this progress is the push for industrial agriculture. This has led to the opening of a modern sunflower processing factory in Apala, an investment worth about UGX 1 billion. This factory, run by local farmer groups alongside individual farmers, helps turn raw sunflowers into valuable products. This means farmers in Alebtong are no longer just selling their crops as they are; they are now directly involved in processing, creating better markets and boosting their earnings through industrialization.
Education is also seeing big improvements. The government’s Universal Primary Education program provides substantial funds, with Alebtong’s 76 public primary schools receiving around UGX 3.3 billion each year. This money has led to a significant increase in the number of children attending school, with about 106,000 students now enrolled, ensuring more young people get an education.
Furthermore, the Parish Development Model (PDM) is proving to be a powerful engine for economic empowerment. This initiative helps families join the formal economy. Since its launch in June 2023, district records show that over 8,151 women have received financial support through its revolving funds. Nearly 5,672 young people involved in farming, pig rearing, and goat keeping have also gained access to vital financial assistance. This program has successfully re-energized community involvement and cooperation, bringing people together for shared prosperity and lasting development.
