Parents in Hoima City have been encouraged to take urgent steps to register their children for the Learners Identification Number, a requirement that authorities say will soon be essential for accessing many basic services.
The appeal was made by Evelyn Oliver Kiiza, the National Identification and Registration Authority registrar for Hoima City, while addressing residents about the ongoing distribution of renewed National IDs. She revealed that a large number of processed cards are already available for collection.
According to Kiiza, more than 80,000 renewed National IDs are ready across Hoima City and Hoima District. Out of these, at least 45,000 cards belong to Hoima City residents. She noted that the cards processed between May and early July can now be picked up from the city’s public library.
Kiiza warned residents to be cautious of individuals who demand payment during collection of IDs. She emphasized that both the renewal exercise and the collection of cards are completely free of charge. Anyone asked to pay money was advised to report the matter immediately.
She added that applicants should carry their original documents or a letter from the police to help with verification during collection.
Kiiza also urged parents not to ignore the importance of the Learners Identification Number, explaining that, in the coming years, children without these numbers could face challenges accessing essential services tied to the National ID system.
In the neighbouring Kikuube District, more than 35,000 National IDs have also been cleared and are ready for collection at various subcounty offices.
