Kampala, Uganda – A man identified as Kasozi Samson has been apprehended by the Ugandan Police Force on charges of fraud, following allegations of a sophisticated con targeting individuals sympathetic to the late Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya. Kasozi is accused of soliciting funds under the pretense of collecting condolences for the late Odinga.
Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement officials revealed that Kasozi had amassed a staggering 86,000,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) through the scheme. The arrest was prompted by a combination of public complaints and heightened scrutiny from the MTN telecommunications company.
MTN flagged Kasozi’s account after observing an unusual pattern of activity. The company noted multiple transactions, including numerous transfers of 10,000,000 UGX and even larger sums, occurring in rapid succession. These suspicious transactions triggered MTN’s fraud detection systems, leading to the holding of Kasozi’s account.
Police are currently working to trace the flow of the stolen funds and identify all the victims of the scam. They have urged the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes and to verify the legitimacy of any fundraising initiatives before making contributions. Kasozi Samson is expected to appear in court soon to face charges of fraud and obtaining money by false pretense.
