The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has revealed a significant plan to alter its party rules. The proposal aims to remove the limit on how many terms their party president can serve. This crucial change is designed to ensure that the current party leader, Jimmy James Michael Akena Obote, can run for the national presidency in the 2031 general elections.
UPC Secretary General Fred Ebil Ebil announced this development at a public event in Dokolo District. He informed party supporters that the idea for this constitutional amendment emerged from a recent online meeting of the UPC National Council, which acts as the party’s top decision-making body.
Members of the council decided to push for removing the presidential term limit within the party’s constitution. They argued that this move is essential to maintain strong leadership continuity and to strengthen the party’s position for upcoming elections.
Ebil clarified that while the proposal has strong support, it must still follow the party’s official procedures. It will be presented to various party organs for their review and final approval before it can be put into effect.
This strategic step by the UPC comes as the party begins to prepare its campaign for the 2031 elections. With this proposed amendment, Akena is clearly positioned to remain the party’s leader and presidential candidate, solidifying his path to the nation’s top office.
