Obama Pays Tribute to Raila Odinga as a True Defender of Democracy

Former US President Barack Obama has praised the late Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling him a true defender of democracy and justice.

In a heartfelt message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obama said Odinga’s life was marked by courage, sacrifice, and a deep love for his country. He noted that Odinga’s decades-long political journey showed his dedication to freedom, democracy, and self-governance in Kenya.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured years of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom in Kenya,” Obama wrote.

The former US leader, whose father was Kenyan, said he personally witnessed Odinga’s commitment to putting Kenya’s interests above personal gain. Obama admired Odinga’s ability to choose peace and reconciliation even during the most difficult political moments.

“Time and again, I saw him put his country before his own ambitions. He always stood for peace without compromising his values,” Obama added.

He also said Odinga’s legacy extended far beyond Kenya, inspiring democratic movements and leaders across Africa and the world. “His leadership inspired many who continue to fight for good governance and human rights,” Obama noted.

Obama concluded by sending his condolences to Odinga’s family and the people of Kenya, saying, “Michelle and I send our deepest sympathies to his family and to all Kenyans.”

Raila Odinga, who passed away earlier this week, was one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. His lifelong struggle for democracy, good governance, and justice shaped Kenya’s political landscape and earned him global admiration.
