President Yoweri Museveni has extended financial assistance to families who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident that occurred along the Kampala–Gulu highway in Kiryandongo District.
According to police reports, the accident happened on October 22 at around 12:15 a.m. in Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm. It involved two buses—Nile Star Coaches (UBF 614X) and Planet Company (UAM 045V)—a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07), and a Tata lorry (UBK 647C). The collision claimed 46 lives, while several others sustained serious injuries.
Traffic police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said initial investigations revealed that the Nile Star bus, which was heading to Gulu, tried to overtake the lorry before colliding with the oncoming vehicles.
In a statement shared on his official X (Twitter) account, President Museveni expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and directed that each bereaved family receive Shs5 million, while each injured survivor be given Shs1 million to help with medical expenses.
“I have instructed the State House Comptroller to provide Shs5 million to every bereaved family and Shs1 million to those who were injured in this unfortunate accident,” the President said.
He also called on all road users to be extra cautious to avoid such heartbreaking incidents in the future. “I urge every motorist and road user to drive carefully and responsibly. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he added.
Police later clarified that earlier reports of 63 deaths were inaccurate, as some victims initially thought to be dead were later found alive. The confirmed number of fatalities stands at 46.
Authorities continue to work closely with health and emergency teams to ensure that all victims and their families receive timely updates and support.
