Minister Kahinda Otafiire Steps In to Save Busoga One Annual Event After Local Security Blocks It

Internal Affairs Minister Kahinda Otafiire has overturned a decision by Jinja City security authorities that had stopped Busoga One Radio from holding its annual event, clearing the way for the celebration to proceed.

The minister’s directive followed a formal complaint lodged by Paul Mwiru on behalf of Busoga One Radio Limited after the Resident City Commissioner, Richard Gulume Balyaino, ordered the police to halt the gathering. Local security officials had argued that the event was being planned during what they described as a politically sensitive period.

In a letter dated December 5, 2025, Minister Otafiire said he had examined the complaint and found no lawful reason for the event to be blocked. He noted that the explanation given by the Jinja City security committee—that the country was in a political season—was not a valid basis for restricting public gatherings.

He reminded the police leadership that civic freedoms must be protected and that political discussions are not prohibited during this time.

The minister directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure the event takes place without interference, stressing the need to protect the public’s right to organise and express themselves peacefully.

His intervention has restored confidence among the organisers, who had already put significant effort into preparing for the annual celebration. The police have now been instructed to review the earlier decision and allow the event to go ahead smoothly.
