Mbarara City Records Over 1,000 New HIV Infections in Six Months
Mbarara City has experienced a concerning rise in HIV infections, with over 1,000 new cases reported in the past six months. This alarming statistic was shared by Ms. Dorcus Twinabeitu, the HIV/AIDS focal person for Mbarara City, during a media briefing held on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists, Ms. Twinabeitu highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and intervention to combat the spread of HIV in the city. She attributed the spike in infections to a combination of factors, including insufficient access to preventive measures, a lack of comprehensive sexual education, and social stigma that prevents individuals from seeking testing and treatment.
“The increase in new infections is a clear indication that more needs to be done to address the underlying causes and to provide adequate support for those living with HIV,” Ms. Twinabeitu emphasized. She called for a multi-faceted approach involving community education, improved healthcare services, and stronger partnerships between government and non-governmental organizations.
The city’s health officials are now intensifying efforts to enhance public awareness campaigns and expand access to testing and antiretroviral treatment. Ms. Twinabeitu also stressed the importance of community involvement and support in addressing the epidemic, urging local leaders and residents to participate actively in prevention and care initiatives.
Mbarara City’s health department is planning to roll out several initiatives aimed at reducing the transmission rate, including mobile testing units, distribution of condoms, and educational programs targeting high-risk groups.
