Lira District Celebrates a Landmark Moment: A Woman Rises to Vice Chairperson After Two Decades, Ushering in a New Era of Inclusive Leadership and Community Focus

Lira District in Uganda has made a historic appointment, naming a woman as its vice chairperson for the first time in twenty years. This significant move took place recently during a district council meeting where Jane Achola, the representative for Barr Sub-county, was officially chosen for the role. This appointment marks a notable step towards more inclusive leadership within the district.

The new district executive committee also saw other crucial appointments. Isaac Newton Bua, the youth councilor, was named Secretary for Finance and Administration. Bonny Omara, representing Agweng Sub-county, will now serve as the Secretary for Works and Technical Services. Additionally, Joyce Amule, councilor for Aromo Sub-county, was appointed Secretary for Community-Based Services, completing a diverse team ready to serve the people of Lira.

Following these appointments, LCV Chairperson RCM Okello Orik urged all councilors and the newly formed executive to prioritize unity and teamwork. He stressed that effective service delivery to the community depends on their collective efforts. Chairperson Orik emphasized that the selections were based on fairness and inclusiveness, considering representation from various areas of the district. He also issued a clear warning, stating that any executive members who fail to perform their duties adequately would be removed from their positions, underscoring the high expectations for commitment and results.

Adding to the optimism, the Speaker of the District Council, Moses Otim, expressed strong confidence in the abilities of the current council. He believes that many councilors bring valuable professional experience that will significantly boost service delivery across Lira District. The new leaders, including Vice Chairperson Achola, have pledged to work closely with both fellow councilors and residents to ensure that the district sees tangible improvements and effective governance. This moment truly signifies a renewed commitment to progress and representation in Lira.
