As nominations for the upcoming Village Local Council One (LC1) elections in Lira City, Uganda, got underway, candidates are making grand promises to their communities. They pledge to deliver better services, enhance safety, and lead with fairness and inclusivity in preparation for the July 28, 2026 polls.
Moses Eyen, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for Ireda Central Park Cell, is seeking another term in office. Fresh from his nomination, Eyen addressed his supporters, highlighting what he considers a successful previous tenure. He pointed to the effective implementation of government programs like the Parish Development Model in his area. Furthermore, Eyen emphasized how new measures, such as verifying new residents with recommendation letters, significantly boosted community safety and accountability, leading to a noticeable drop in local crime. He urged all candidates to remember that the LC1 role is a voluntary commitment to public service, requiring unbiased leadership for everyone, regardless of background or politics.
However, his main opponent, independent candidate Ramathan Otim, has cast a dark cloud over the nomination process. Otim strongly accused Eyen’s supporters of engaging in intimidation tactics. He reported that his campaign posters were torn down, his campaign staff were attacked, and stones were thrown at his vehicle as he left after his nomination. Otim also challenged Eyen’s claims about improved security, asserting that crime remains a serious problem in the area.
