Lira, Uganda — The Lango Cultural Institution, under the leadership of His Royal Highness Eng. Michael Moses Odongo-Okune, the Won Nyaci Me Lango, has paid heartfelt tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a visionary leader who stood for unity, peace, and Pan-Africanism.
According to the institution, Raila Odinga’s life and career were guided by his belief in reconciliation and peaceful coexistence. He was widely recognized for placing national unity and the welfare of citizens above political divisions. Beyond Kenya, Odinga played a vital role in promoting peace and democracy across Africa by mediating political conflicts and encouraging dialogue among leaders.
His most recent pursuit of the African Union Commission Chairmanship was a testament to his lifelong dedication to strengthening African institutions and fostering unity across the continent.
The Lango Cultural Institution also highlighted Odinga’s historical ties to Uganda, recalling how his family contributed to the struggle for Uganda’s liberation during the Iddi Amin regime. To honor this longstanding friendship, the Won Nyaci invited Odinga as a special guest during his coronation ceremony — a gesture that symbolized the deep connection between the Luo and Lango peoples.
In their message of condolence, the institution extended sympathy to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, the Luo community, and the entire Kenyan nation. They noted that although his passing has created a great void, his legacy as a unifying and Pan-African leader will continue to inspire generations across Africa.
