Beloved Kenyan gospel singer Betty Bayo, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, has died just weeks before a planned birthday getaway with her son. The singer passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital after a battle with advanced leukemia.
Before her death, Bayo had shared an emotional video online where she spoke about her plans to celebrate her upcoming birthday with her son. She said she wanted an intimate celebration away from the public eye. “I’m here to book a holiday destination for my birthday next month. Funny enough, we share the same birth date with my son. This time, I don’t want anyone else — just me and my son,” she said in the video.
Her son had suggested celebrating in Kiambu, but Bayo wanted to make the moment extra special by choosing an international destination. Sadly, she did not live to see that day.
A family spokesperson confirmed her passing and revealed that the illness had worsened rapidly after she was diagnosed with acute leukemia. “Betty was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital on Friday after she began bleeding heavily. Doctors did everything possible, but the will of God prevailed,” the family said.
Bayo’s ex-husband, Pastor Victor Kanyari, expressed deep sorrow in a heartfelt tribute. “It hurts in ways I can’t explain. You left before I could say everything I needed to. I still see you in our children’s laughter and in every small thing that reminds me of you. Through everything, you were family, and your memory will never fade,” he said.
Betty Bayo became a household name in the early 2010s as part of Kenya’s vibrant Kikuyu gospel music scene. Her song *11th Hour* became an anthem of faith and hope, speaking about divine timing and perseverance. Over the years, she produced several other hit songs including *Gatho*, *Thiiri*, *Udahi*, and *Maneno*, which touched on life’s real struggles — from heartbreak and parenting to faith and resilience.
Born in Banana, Kiambu County, as the youngest of eight children, Bayo often talked about her humble background and the challenges she faced growing up. Her personal story of strength and faith inspired many, especially women and single mothers who found comfort in her songs.
Her death has left a deep void in Kenya’s gospel community and among her countless fans who viewed her as a source of light and encouragement.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family soon as tributes continue to pour in for the woman whose voice and faith touched many hearts across the nation.
