Lira, Uganda – The much-anticipated National Boys Football Championship has officially kicked off in Lira City, bringing together young football talents from across Uganda. The exciting tournament was launched by the State Minister for Primary Education, Joyce Moriku Kaducu, who emphasized the importance of nurturing young athletes and ensuring fair play throughout the competition.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Kaducu urged everyone involved – from teachers and coaches to players and fans – to uphold discipline and sportsmanship. She highlighted that this championship is not just about winning; it’s about helping young learners develop their sporting abilities and grow into well-rounded individuals. The Minister also praised the Ministry of Education and Sports for its ongoing commitment to supporting school sports, which are vital for the nation’s youth.
This year’s championship introduces some fantastic new features designed to benefit every participant. According to Justus Mugisha, president of the Uganda Secondary School Sports Association (USSSA), a new competition format ensures that all teams play an equal number of matches. This means more game time for every player, along with special classification games aimed at further developing skills and identifying future stars. Even better, students are actively involved in capacity-building programs, receiving training to become coaches, referees, and even sports media officers, providing them with valuable skills beyond the field.
The championship is a crucial stepping stone for Uganda’s brightest football prospects. The top three schools from this tournament, along with Bukedea Comprehensive School, will proudly represent Uganda at the upcoming Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games. These prestigious international games are scheduled to take place in Tanzania from August 12 to 22. This opportunity highlights Uganda’s strong position in school sports, with the country being recognized globally for its excellent organization of such events.
