Entebbe Municipality has proudly renamed Kalitusi Road, which is located next to the State House, to ‘Eng. Odongo Okune Road’. This significant change recognizes the outstanding contributions of Engineer Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, a person celebrated for both his professional achievements and his leadership in cultural affairs.
The decision, made by a unanimous vote from the municipal council and chaired by Mayor Fabrice Brad Rulinda, highlights the community’s desire to honor individuals who have made a lasting difference to Uganda. Dr. Odongo Okune’s impact is significant in two main areas: developing the country’s infrastructure and preserving its cultural identity.
Originally from Lango, Dr. Odongo Okune dedicated most of his career to engineering, particularly in building Uganda’s vital road network. He played a crucial role as the Executive Director of the Uganda Road Fund (URF) for many years. During his time at URF, he was a strong supporter of keeping roads well-maintained, understanding that good roads are essential for economic growth. His leadership and ability to secure funding ensured that countless kilometers of roads across the country remained usable, connecting communities and boosting trade.
In 2017, Dr. Odongo Okune transitioned from shaping roads to guiding the cultural well-being of the Lango people as their Won Nyaci (cultural leader). This move showed that his wisdom and leadership were valued far beyond the engineering field. Mayor Rulinda emphasized that this renaming is a historic moment, celebrating a man whose work has benefited every part of Uganda, yet who remains deeply connected to his cultural heritage. The Mayor added that Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune has built more than just roads; he has created a legacy of commitment, wisdom, and service that inspires us all.
