Small and medium enterprises represent the very heart of Uganda’s financial vitality, yet many of these vital ventures are currently fighting for survival against a tide of economic instability and internal management hurdles. In a decisive move to turn the tide, the government has officially introduced the Regional Business Rescue and Aftercare Programme in Lira City. This strategic intervention is specifically designed to breathe new life into struggling businesses, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and support systems necessary to transition from the brink of failure to long term prosperity.
This essential program is a collaborative effort led by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau in partnership with the International Development Law Organization and with the generous backing of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. By focusing on practical skills and professional guidance, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between financial distress and sustainable growth. It addresses the core issues that often lead to business closure, such as weak corporate governance, poor financial oversight, and the unpredictable shocks of the modern market.
During the official launch, Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole emphasized that this initiative arrives at a critical turning point. He noted that while Lira is rapidly becoming a premier commercial hub for Northern Uganda, many local entrepreneurs are still held back by a lack of access to expert advisory services and sound fiscal management strategies. He praised the program as a vital component in the national strategy to build a competitive and inclusive economy where every hardworking entrepreneur has a fair shot at success. Commissioner Egole urged business owners to not only embrace this training but also to tap into other government resources like the GROW Project to secure financing and explore new export markets.
The urgency of this mission was echoed by Caroline Egesa, the URSB Commissioner for Insolvency and Receivership. She pointed out that the collapse of a business is rarely due to a lack of opportunity but is more often the result of delayed interventions and a lack of disciplined planning. Since its inception in 2023, this rescue program has already empowered over 450 entrepreneurs in Kampala and hundreds more across major regional centers like Jinja, Mbarara, and Gulu. The expansion into Lira ensures that the northern region is not left behind in this national wave of economic rejuvenation.
Through an intensive three day training session, participants are being immersed in high level modules covering everything from risk management and legal compliance to digital transformation and financial literacy. The goal is to cultivate a new generation of resilient business leaders who can generate steady employment, attract serious investment, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s transformation. By shifting the focus from business closure to business recovery, the government is ensuring that the dreams of local entrepreneurs remain alive, profitable, and capable of driving Uganda toward a brighter financial future.
