Empowering Health and Hope: Dedicated Students Bring Vital Free Medical Camp to Oyam, Delivering Crucial Specialized Care to Over 10,000 Underserved Residents

A significant humanitarian effort is underway in Oyam District, Uganda, where a five-day free medical camp is set to bring essential healthcare services to over 10,000 people. This impactful initiative, organized by the Lango Students Association (LASA) from Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus, will take place at Anyeke Health Centre.

Scheduled to run from June 22 to June 26, 2026, the camp will offer a wide array of specialized treatments. Patients can expect general health check-ups, necessary surgeries, vital cervical cancer screenings, ear, nose, and throat treatments, circumcisions, ultrasound scans, sickle cell screenings, and comprehensive reproductive health services.

Acuma Mark, president of LASA KIU Western Campus, highlighted the camp’s crucial mission: to tackle the severe lack of access to specialized medical care, particularly in remote rural areas. He assured the public that experienced Lango medical professionals, many of whom are alumni of KIU Western Campus, along with dedicated health workers and volunteers, will be leading these services.

While the project embodies LASA members’ commitment to giving back to their community, relying on their contributions for funding, organizers are urgently calling for more support. They face financial challenges and appeal to kind-hearted individuals and organizations to help ensure the camp’s full success.

Already, the initiative has garnered valuable assistance, including a generous cash contribution from Oyam South MP Patrick Ogwang Obura and crucial feeding support from Oyam North MP Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko.

Dr. Patrick Omara, who oversees Anyeke Health Centre, warmly welcomed the camp. He emphasized how this outreach will drastically improve healthcare accessibility for residents across both Oyam North and Oyam South. Dr. Omara further explained that Anyeke Health Centre is a key hub, supervising many smaller health facilities, making this camp a vital complement to ongoing efforts to close the gaps in local healthcare. He stressed the immense importance of such interventions in Oyam, a district home to approximately 500,000 people, underscoring the vast need for these services.
