EC Set to Declare Phiona Nyamutoro Unopposed as Nebbi Woman MP After Rival’s Nomination is Cancelled

The road to the 2026 elections in Nebbi District has taken a dramatic turn, with the Electoral Commission moving to announce Minister Phiona Nyamutoro as the unopposed Woman Member of Parliament after her only challenger was removed from the race.

This follows a decision by the Electoral Commission to cancel the nomination of National Unity Platform candidate Mercy Rebecca Abedican. According to the ruling issued by EC chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, Abedican’s endorsement signatures were found invalid after the two individuals listed as her seconders denied ever signing her nomination forms.

The Commission concluded that because her nomination did not meet the legal requirements, she could not continue as a candidate. With that decision, Nyamutoro—who earlier won the NRM primaries with a wide margin—now stands as the only eligible contender for the Nebbi Woman MP seat.

In its communication, the EC overturned the earlier decision of the Nebbi District Returning Officer and directed that Nyamutoro be officially declared elected without opposition.

The formal announcement is expected to be made in Nebbi District on November 17, 2025.
