The highly anticipated Bata Subcounty Football Tournament 2026 has officially launched in Dokolo, Uganda, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Dokolo North County Member of Parliament-elect Joseph Jones Ogwal. This vibrant event aims to unite communities, promote healthy competition, and create opportunities for the region’s youth.
The opening ceremony, held at Barlela Primary School, was filled with excitement. In the boys’ category, Alapata Parish delivered a strong performance, securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Barlela Parish in a thrilling match. Earlier in the day, the girls’ teams from Barlela and Alapata battled fiercely, resulting in a goalless draw, showcasing the talent and determination present in both sides. The tournament has attracted participation from six parishes: Atabu, Barlela, Ocero, Alapata, Bardege, and Apenyo, with matches scheduled for weekends until May 18, 2026.
Speaking on behalf of MP-elect Ogwal, local leader Geoffrey Odur emphasized the tournament’s vital role beyond just sports. He highlighted that these games are a powerful way for young people to connect, build lasting friendships, and steer clear of crime. Furthermore, the competition serves as an important platform to scout and nurture promising football talent, with ambitions to form a strong constituency team that can eventually compete at a national level, including participation in the FUFA 5th Division League. Plans are also underway to improve local playgrounds, providing better facilities for sports development.
Odur passionately urged all residents to set aside political differences and work together with their elected leadership to advance development and progress across the entire Dokolo North Constituency. This football tournament is a testament to MP-elect Ogwal’s broader vision to uplift sports and culture, empower the youth, and preserve the rich Lango cultural heritage, fostering a stronger, more united community.
