Dokolo Faces Urgent Crisis: School Dropouts Are Causing a Dangerous Surge in Teenage Pregnancies, Undermining Girls’ Futures and Community Progress

Dokolo District authorities are deeply concerned about a troubling rise in teenage pregnancies, directly linking it to the growing number of girls who are leaving school early. This alarming trend is actively harming efforts to protect young people and secure a better future for them.

A key health official, Constansia Alela, explained during a recent meeting that girls who drop out of school become much more vulnerable. They are more likely to experience early sexual activity, exploitation, and ultimately, pregnancy, compared to their peers who stay in classrooms. Her message was clear: keeping girls in school is one of the most effective ways to prevent teenage pregnancies.

The situation is particularly severe in some areas, with Adeknino Sub-county seeing a 40% rate of teenage pregnancies. Across the entire district, the average stands at a high 24%. Officials hope to bring this down to 18% by June 2026, but it will require significant effort.

Many factors force these girls out of school. Poverty often plays a big role, along with early marriages, a lack of strong parental guidance, and limited access to basic period products. Old cultural beliefs and parents not fully understanding why it’s important to educate girls also add to the problem.

Health experts warn that when girls leave school and become pregnant, it creates a cycle of hardship. Not only does it increase the risk of pregnancy, but it also cuts them off from vital information and services about reproductive health. Many pregnant girls never return to school, trapping themselves and their families in ongoing poverty.

Dokolo District is actively working to tackle this challenge. They are educating communities, strengthening systems to protect children, and providing health services that are friendly and accessible to teenagers. The district is also collaborating with local leaders and schools to encourage girls to stay in their education. This combined effort is crucial to protect Dokolo’s young girls and ensure they have a chance at a brighter future.
