The High Court in Kampala delivered a landmark ruling today, October 1, 2025, in the case filed by Jimmy Akena Obote, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president. In a significant blow to Akena’s political ambitions, the court ruled that he is not eligible to be nominated as a presidential candidate in the 2025/2031 presidential elections.

The court’s decision was based on the UPC constitution, effectively barring Akena from pursuing the presidency. Additionally, the court nullified the extension of Akena’s term of office for 12 months, pending the determination of another UPC case under Justice Joyce Laguna. This move underscores the ongoing internal conflicts within the UPC and the challenges facing its leadership.

In a partial allowance of Akena’s requests, the court granted the UPC executive committee, led by Akena, a limited time in office solely for the purpose of nominating candidates for parliamentary elections. Their term will expire once the nominations are completed, providing temporary relief for the party.

The ruling has significant implications for the UPC party and its leadership. With Akena’s presidential ambitions dashed, the party will need to regroup and identify alternative candidates. The court’s decision also highlights the importance of adhering to party constitutions and ensuring that leadership transitions are conducted in accordance with the law.

As the UPC navigates this critical juncture, party leaders and members will be watching closely to see how the party responds to the court’s ruling and what the future holds for Akena’s leadership .
