In response to growing financial challenges, the Catholic Church in Uganda has announced a nationwide appeal to raise Shs 600 million aimed at supporting 380 poor and vulnerable children.
The call was made by Rt. Rev. Serverus Jjumba, the Bishop of Masaka Diocese and President of Caritas Uganda, during the launch of the organization’s annual fundraising campaign. The campaign will conclude with a charity dinner scheduled for November 28, 2025, at Hotel Africana, under the theme *“Charity is the Heart of Faith.”*
Bishop Jjumba said the Church’s goal is to fight poverty and promote human development among the most disadvantaged. “Our faith becomes meaningful only when it is expressed through love and compassion,” he emphasized.
For years, Caritas Uganda has been a key pillar in providing humanitarian assistance, promoting community growth, and upholding the dignity of vulnerable people across its 19 diocesan branches. The organization provides relief during disasters, supports livelihoods, and helps families regain stability after crises.
This year, Caritas aims to mobilize 10,000 Ugandans to each contribute Shs 60,000. The funds collected will help provide education, food, and welfare support for orphans and children in need, as well as extend help to struggling families.
“Every shilling donated will directly reach the children and families who are suffering the most,” Bishop Jjumba assured.
In the past year, public contributions enabled Caritas Uganda to respond to emergencies such as helping 372 victims of the Kiteezi landfill disaster in Kampala and 895 displaced residents in Kasese following floods. The organization also provided Christmas gifts to Nsambya Babies’ Home, sponsored 11 children from Kotido Diocese, and supported 30 families facing urgent crises.
“These are real examples of how Ugandans’ generosity transforms lives,” Bishop Jjumba noted.
Fr Hilary Muheezangango, the national director of Caritas Uganda, stressed the importance of education as the most sustainable way to fight poverty. “If we don’t invest in educating children, we are simply preparing for a future of continued suffering,” he said.
He further clarified that the Church’s support extends to everyone, regardless of religion or background. Through partnerships with various schools, Caritas Uganda continues to secure scholarships and opportunities for vulnerable children nationwide.
The Church hopes that this year’s campaign will not only raise funds but also inspire more Ugandans to embrace the spirit of giving and make lasting change in the lives of those who need it most.
