CanalBox: New Internet Service Provider Launches in Uganda
Introduction
A new broadband internet service provider, CanalBox, has officially launched in Uganda. The company has invested over Shs50 billion in the past 11 months to prepare for this launch.
Internet Plans
CanalBox offers two fiber optic internet plans:
– Start Plan: 50 Mbps at Shs110,000 per month
– Premium Plan: 200 Mbps at Shs200,000 per month
These plans cater to both basic and heavy internet users, providing affordable and high-speed internet access.
Company Goals
Jean-François Duboy, Managing Director of GVA, highlighted the aim to democratize broadband internet access through fiber. He emphasized the value of the Premium Plan, which offers 200 Mbps for Shs200,000, aiming to provide a game-changing internet experience for many Ugandan families.
Market Expansion
Julius Kayoboke, Chief Executive Officer of GVA, noted that when they entered the Ugandan market, only 30,000 homes were connected to fiber internet. In the past 11 months, CanalBox has covered 5,000 homes and plans to connect another 500,000 homes in Kampala within the next three to four years.
Benefits of Increased Internet Access
Julianne Mweheire, Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), stated that increased internet access boosts business opportunities and fosters innovation. CanalBox’s internet plans are ideal for businesses, homes, and schools requiring reliable internet for streaming, video conferencing, and other demanding applications.
Government Support
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, welcomed CanalBox to the Ugandan market. He praised the company’s entry as a vote of confidence in Uganda’s government, its business-friendly policies, and its people. Tayebwa expressed optimism about the impact CanalBox would have on growing broadband internet prevalence in Uganda.
