Alebtong District is abuzz following the close of nominations for the 2026-2031 Woman MP seat. The race features a diverse field of candidates vying for the crucial position, with varying political affiliations. Aduku Caroline represents the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), while Lakisa Mercy is running under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) banner. Independents include Imat Mary Alip, who is using a clock as her symbol; Abongo Elizabeth, with a candle; and Acen Christine Ayo, whose symbol is a ball.
The independent candidates’ chosen symbols offer insight into their potential platforms. Imat Mary Alip’s clock could signify a commitment to efficiency, progress, and timely delivery of services. Abongo’s candle may represent a focus on bringing light, hope, and guidance to the district. Acen’s ball could symbolize unity, teamwork, and a focus on community development through sports and other initiatives.
However, the nomination process has seen a surge of support for Imat Mary Alip. Muzee Odero Martin, Vice Chairperson of UPC Awei Sub-county, stated that she is the only candidate capable of providing effective representation and service delivery. Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Odong Obira, former LC3 Chairman of Awei Sub-county (FDC), urged voters to prioritize quality leadership and scrutinize candidates’ manifestos. He also endorsed Alip.
Adding to the momentum, Imat Betty Lujino, former Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League for Awei Sub-county, expressed her appreciation for Alip’s candidature, highlighting her education, experience, and commitment to the common person. The strong backing continued, with numerous sub-counties, including Omoro, Angetta, and others, expressing confidence in Alip, regardless of her political affiliation. Elites from Moroto County also welcomed her as their preferred candidate. Elders and civil servants have also embraced her ambitions, hoping she will follow in the footsteps of her late husband, Hon. Alip, a former MP. This widespread support positions Imat Mary Alip as a strong contender in the upcoming election.
