Bukedea, Uganda – Katekwan Primary School in Bukedea District recently held a heartfelt thanksgiving celebration, honoring its headteacher, Mrs. Anyait Norah, and the entire staff for orchestrating an astonishing turnaround in academic performance. The School Management Committee (SMC) and Parents Teachers Association (PTA) organized the event to acknowledge the exceptional efforts that have brought new hope to the community.
For years, Katekwan Primary School struggled, with a history of low academic achievement, including many students scoring failing grades. However, the latest examination results from 2025 tell a dramatically different story. The school proudly announced that 40 candidates achieved Division Two, with only one student receiving a Division Four. This significant leap from past failures represents a monumental step forward for the institution.
The credit for this remarkable improvement is widely attributed to the dynamic leadership of Headteacher Mrs. Anyait Norah. Since her arrival in Bukedea District last year, Mrs. Norah, an alumna of the area with prior experience in Amudat and Napak districts, has introduced innovative and transformative ideas that have been eagerly embraced by parents and the wider community. Her reputation precedes her, having been nominated twice as a difference-making teacher for international visits to Ireland.
Joseph Orone, the Vice Chairperson of the SMC, expressed immense pride in the school’s progress. He highlighted that such strong results had never been seen since the school’s inception, describing Mrs. Norah’s administration as truly exceptional.
Stephen Okurut, the Bukedea District Education Officer and a former headteacher of Katekwan, also shared his perspective on the school’s journey. He recalled the severe challenges faced by the government-established school, including a period when it was closed for two years. Okurut acknowledged the historic difficulties, including a time when the school registered many failures, and spoke of his own past efforts to secure essential facilities like a pit latrine for the school. He lauded Mrs. Anyait’s commitment, confirming that the District Service Commission actively recruits dedicated teachers like her.
The collective efforts of the headteacher, staff, and the supportive community have not only revitalized Katekwan Primary School but have also set a new standard for academic excellence and dedication in the region.
