Security forces in Kotido District have arrested a 21-year-old man who had been posing as a soldier and robbing people in different trading centers. The suspect, identified as Apanamut Mojong, a resident of Lokitelaebu Town Council, was captured in a joint operation carried out by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
According to police, Mojong had been moving around dressed in army uniform, intimidating residents and stealing their belongings. His actions had caused fear and insecurity among communities in the area.
The Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson, IP Mike Longole, confirmed the arrest and described it as a major breakthrough in the fight against criminal activities in Kotido. He said the suspect was using military attire to deceive and frighten people into giving him money and other valuables.
“The suspect is now in custody and will be thoroughly questioned before being taken to court,” Longole said.
He commended local residents for their vigilance and quick reporting of suspicious individuals, which made it easier for security forces to track down the fake soldier.
Longole also urged the public to continue cooperating with security authorities to enhance community safety. “We encourage everyone to remain alert and report any strange persons or criminal behavior immediately. Working together is the best way to maintain peace and security in Kotido and the entire Karamoja region,” he added.
The arrest has brought relief to many residents who had been living in fear, hoping this marks the end of a wave of robberies that had disturbed the area for weeks.
