In a moving display of compassion and medical excellence, twenty residents from across the Lango sub-region have been granted a second chance at a life of movement and self-reliance. This transformation is the result of a powerful collaboration between the Suman Foundation and Lira Regional Referral Hospital, a partnership specifically designed to give back the dignity and independence that comes with physical mobility.
The life-altering technology was expertly fitted and customized by the hospital’s Orthopaedic Department, led by the dedicated Raphael Omodi. During a touching ceremony held on Friday, June 20, 2026, these high-quality prosthetic limbs were officially handed over to the beneficiaries, marking the end of a difficult chapter and the beginning of a journey toward renewed opportunity.
The recipients of this generous gift represent a cross-section of the community, including those who lost limbs in tragic road accidents, workplace injuries, or due to underlying health struggles such as diabetes and severe infections. For many of these individuals, the loss of a limb meant more than just a physical limitation; it often resulted in social isolation and financial hardship.
Venkatesh Manepali, the manager of the Suman Foundation, shared his deep appreciation for the medical team at Lira Regional Referral Hospital. He noted that the success of this program relied heavily on the commitment and cooperation of the hospital staff. He emphasized that the foundation’s ultimate goal is to restore a sense of hope to those living with disabilities, ensuring that every person has the tools they need to participate fully in society.
Representing the hospital leadership, administrator Emmanuel Ogwang expressed sincere gratitude to the Suman Foundation for its unwavering support of the region’s most vulnerable citizens. He stated that the hospital remains fully committed to working with charitable organizations and development partners to expand the reach of quality healthcare. This specific intervention, he noted, is a perfect example of how strategic partnerships can solve real-world problems and change lives for the better.
The atmosphere at the handover was filled with emotion as the beneficiaries spoke about what these new limbs meant to them. Many shared that they finally felt confident enough to return to work, join social gatherings, and support their families without help. This initiative is a cornerstone of the ongoing efforts in Northern Uganda to foster inclusion and provide essential rehabilitation services to everyone in need. This is not just about walking again; it is about reclaiming the right to a productive and dignified life.
