During a deeply moving visit to the institution on Monday, MP Ogwal handed over 95 high-quality iron sheets valued at more than five million shillings. This generous contribution is earmarked for the roofing of the boys dormitory, a project that has been standing ready for a roof to finally transform it into a safe and dignified home for students. This intervention comes at a critical time, as the school grapples with a massive surge in student enrollment that has pushed the existing infrastructure to its absolute limit.
The school’s Deputy Headteacher, Odur Levi, who has served the institution for over a decade, described the visit as nothing short of historic. He noted that in his thirteen-year tenure, this was the very first time a Member of Parliament had personally inspected the grounds to understand the daily hurdles faced by teachers and students alike. The arrival of the iron sheets is a game-changer, ensuring that the recently completed dormitory walls will no longer sit idle but will soon provide the shelter the young men of Bata deserve.
However, the MP’s commitment to the school extends far beyond construction materials. Recognizing that a modern education requires modern tools, Ogwal pledged to personally follow up on a 2018 promise made by President Yoweri Museveni to establish a computer laboratory at the school. He has already begun high-level discussions with officials from the Ministry of Energy to bring reliable electricity to the area, which would allow the school to move away from its expensive reliance on generators and finally power its water pumps and laboratories efficiently.
Furthermore, the legislator announced a visionary scholarship program set to launch next year. This initiative will provide a vital lifeline to bright students at Bata Secondary School, Agwata Secondary School, and Iguli Girls Secondary School, ensuring that financial hardship does not stand in the way of a child’s potential.
While the school still faces significant obstacles—including a shortage of government-funded teachers and a lack of essential textbooks—the presence and passion of MP Ogwal have signaled a major turning point.
