In a move that promises to save countless young lives, the hospital has officially opened its doors to a brand-new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a world-class pediatric surgical center. These facilities represent more than just bricks and mortar; they are a two-billion-shilling investment in the very future of the region’s children.
For years, many parents in this part of Uganda faced the terrifying prospect of traveling long distances to the capital or other distant cities just to find specialized care for their critically ill newborns or children needing surgery. Those days of desperate, expensive travel are coming to an end. Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole, while officiating the commissioning ceremony, emphasized that this development is a true game-changer. He noted that bringing these advanced medical services closer to the people will eliminate the agony of long-distance referrals and ensure that life-saving interventions happen right here at home.
The hospital director, Dr. Andrew Odur, highlighted the significance of this milestone, explaining that the facility previously struggled with limited capacity and a lack of essential equipment. The new Shs2 billion upgrade, made possible through the collaboration of the Ugandan government and generous international partners such as the UK government, Pathfinder, Empower, and Kids OR, provides the vital tools needed to manage premature births and complex surgical conditions. This means the most vulnerable babies now have a fighting chance at a healthy life.
However, the expansion of the hospital is about more than just new machines. Dr. John Paul Bagala, representing the Ministry of Health, reminded the medical staff that state-of-the-art technology must be matched by professional excellence. He urged health workers to prioritize accountability and punctuality, stressing that many maternal and infant deaths are preventable if leadership is strong and care is provided without delay.
The event also featured a powerful call to action for the community. Lango Diocese Bishop Prof. Alfred Olwa encouraged residents to take personal responsibility for their health.
