Member of Parliament for Otuke County East, Julius Acon Bua, known to many as Achon, has officially begun a major effort to bring clean, safe water to his constituents. Fulfilling a key promise he made during his election campaign, Achon has initiated the drilling of five new boreholes: four in Otuke East County and one in Abia Subcounty in Alebtong District. This crucial project aims to finally solve the long-standing problem of water shortages in these areas.
The new water points will be built in Ajia (Olilim Subcounty), Te-Oboke (Ogor Subcounty), Atinkok (Abia Subcounty in Alebtong District), and Awaka Ogik (Orum Subcounty).
Many residents, like Francis Omara, expressed relief as the drilling began. There had been growing concern and even doubt among some about whether this important promise would ever be kept. However, Achon has now demonstrated his commitment, stating that this initiative is central to his plan to ensure everyone in Otuke East has access to clean, safe drinking water.
During his campaign, Achon traveled throughout the region, assuring people he would tackle the severe water crisis. This crisis has left communities vulnerable to waterborne diseases and poor sanitation for too long.
To make these vital community development projects happen, the Member of Parliament has actively sought support from friends and partners, both within Uganda and internationally, including generous supporters in Australia and the United States. These partnerships also help fund other essential programs like distributing seeds to farmers and providing livestock support.
Achon emphasized that these new water sources will dramatically improve family well-being, boost hygiene, and support the government’s ongoing fight against illnesses caused by unsafe water. He also urged the communities benefiting from these boreholes to take full responsibility for their care. This includes building fences around the boreholes to prevent animals from contaminating the water, ensuring they remain a clean and reliable source for years to come.
