The world of medicine and the people of the Lango sub region are currently united in a deep state of mourning following the passing of a true giant, Dr David Otim Oyet. As his remains arrived at Entebbe International Airport, the atmosphere was heavy with both sorrow and immense pride for a man whose life was dedicated entirely to the service of others. Dr Otim Oyet was far more than just a medical professional; he was a beacon of hope for cancer patients across the globe and a shining example of the excellence a son of Uganda can achieve on the international stage.
His son, Paul Oyet Otim, who traveled from Canada to receive his father, spoke movingly about the incredible legacy left behind. He described the late doctor as an irreplaceable icon who seamlessly balanced world class medical expertise with a profound and unwavering respect for his cultural heritage. Having spent over a decade as a leading consultant in the United Kingdom after previously serving in various Ugandan hospitals, Dr Otim Oyet effectively bridged the gap between global innovation and local compassion. He was a man who walked the halls of prestigious international institutions but never forgot the needs of his people at home.
The late doctor hailed from a distinguished lineage, being the son of the highly respected traditional and religious leader Rwot Paul Oyet. As a proud member of the Omolo Acol Odyek Onywal Iceng clan, Dr Otim Oyet carried his family name with the utmost dignity. His family, including his brother, retired Colonel Charles Olaka Oyet, remembers him as a man of great humility who believed that knowledge was a tool to be used for the benefit of the vulnerable. His nephew and clan chief of Inomo, Frederick Ogwal Oyee, emphasized that while the community feels the pain of this loss, they also stand in celebration of a life lived with remarkable purpose.
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Dr Otim Oyet will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Tegony, located within the Iceme Town Council of Oyam District. His family has issued a heartfelt invitation to the people of Lango and all Ugandans to gather in large numbers to honor a man who put his brilliant mind at the service of the poor, the sick, and the young. His departure leaves a void in the medical community and his community that may never be fully filled, but his contributions to humanity and his spirit of excellence will continue to inspire generations to come.
