A Leader’s Urgent Call: Turning a Time of Mourning into a Powerful Plea for Men’s Health, Early Cancer Detection, and Lasting Family Unity in Lango

The Paramount Chief of Lango, Won Nyaci Moses Michael Odongo Okune, recently transformed a somber condolence visit into an urgent call for action, urging his people to prioritize health, embrace lasting education, and strengthen family bonds. During his visit to the family of the late David Otyek in Lira, the Chief delivered powerful messages aimed at improving the well-being and prosperity of the community.

Chief Okune expressed deep concern over the rising number of men losing their lives to prostate-related illnesses, which often turn into deadly cancer because they are detected too late. He strongly advised all men, especially those between the ages of 30 and 40, to get regular medical check-ups for prostate health. The Chief stressed that early diagnosis and quick treatment are crucial to saving lives, comparing our bodies to machines that need constant care and maintenance to function properly. “Don’t wait until it’s too late,” he urged, “your health is your most valuable asset.”

Beyond health, the Won Nyaci highlighted the profound importance of education. He praised the late Mr. Otyek for investing in his children’s schooling, calling education an enduring legacy that empowers individuals far beyond simply getting a job. Chief Okune explained that education broadens minds, encourages innovation, and enables people to contribute meaningfully to society. He also acknowledged efforts by leaders to encourage graduates to gain practical skills and pursue entrepreneurial ventures. He stressed that while many rely on salaries, true wealth is often built through additional investments and businesses, urging families to embrace entrepreneurship as a path to economic transformation.

Finally, Chief Okune appealed for peace and unity within families. He cautioned relatives against engaging in land disputes, which often tear families apart during times of loss. Instead, he urged them to honor the memory of their loved ones by staying united and protecting the valuable legacy, especially family assets and goodwill, that has been built over a lifetime.

The Won Nyaci’s visit served as a timely reminder that while we mourn those we’ve lost, we must also look forward, safeguarding our health, nurturing our minds, and preserving the strength of our families for a better future.
