Aduku Health Center IV in Kwania District, Uganda, has received two crucial newborn incubators, valued at approximately UGX 28 million. This generous donation marks a significant turning point, promising to save the lives of many premature and critically ill infants in the region.
The incubators were provided by Huguenot Trail Powhatan, Virginia, USA, through the support of Stony Point Church. This vital initiative was made possible by their enduring partnership with Truth Fountain Church Odokomit North in Lira City, Uganda. Michael Bryant, Team Leader for Stony Point Church, explained that this effort is part of a 25-year commitment to improving health and education in Uganda. Kwania District was specifically chosen for this intervention due to its high number of high-risk births.
Pastor Silas Okello of Truth Fountain Church highlighted the urgent need for such equipment. He recalled heartbreaking instances where newborn babies tragically died due to a lack of immediate specialized care, including a case in Kwania where a mother lost her baby right outside the hospital. These tragic events underscored the critical importance of providing essential health support.
Dr. Patrick Ogwal, the Senior Medical Officer at Aduku Health Center IV, expressed profound gratitude for the donation. He explained that the facility cares for over 600 expectant mothers every four months. Among these, a significant number – between 50 and 60 babies – are born prematurely or with low birth weights. In the past, the absence of specialized equipment forced the health center to refer these vulnerable newborns to distant, higher-level facilities, often with dire consequences.
With these two new incubators, Aduku Health Center IV can now provide immediate and local critical care for premature and ill babies. This means a drastic reduction in dangerous referrals and a much greater chance of survival and healthy development for Kwania’s tiniest residents.
Nancy Alobo, a local mother who delivered at Aduku Health Center IV, shared her appreciation, emphasizing how these machines will directly benefit mothers like her by ensuring their babies receive urgent care if born prematurely. This donation brings immense relief and hope to families across the community.
Health officials believe these incubators will dramatically improve health outcomes for newborns in Kwania, ushering in a new era of enhanced care and a brighter future for countless infants and their families.
