A devastating road accident on the Kampala–Gulu Highway has left 63 people dead and several others injured, according to a statement released by the Uganda Police early Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at around 12:15 a.m. on October 22, 2025, at Kitaleba Village near Asili Farm. The accident involved four vehicles — two passenger buses, a truck, and a saloon car. Police identified the vehicles as an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches, another Isuzu bus from Planet Company, a Tata lorry, and a Toyota Surf.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the deadly collision happened when one of the buses heading from Kampala to Gulu tried to overtake a lorry at a sharp section of the road. At the same time, another bus traveling in the opposite direction attempted to overtake a smaller vehicle. Both buses collided head-on, triggering a chain reaction that involved all four vehicles.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, with wreckage scattered across the road and emergency responders struggling to save survivors trapped inside the vehicles. Police and local authorities immediately rushed to the scene to assist in rescue operations and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Authorities have since warned drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially at night, and avoid reckless overtaking that puts lives at risk. Investigations into the tragic crash are ongoing.
This latest incident adds to the growing concern over road safety in Uganda, with many calling for stricter traffic enforcement and better road discipline to prevent such heartbreaking losses.
