On Monday, October 6, 2025, authorities arrested 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mityana District after they allegedly blocked a major road as presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) moved toward a planned campaign rally.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the arrests took place at Bujjuko Trading Centre, where the group reportedly disrupted traffic by drumming, whistling, and forming a blockade despite repeated warnings from security personnel. Onyango stated that joint security teams had been deployed to facilitate Kyagulanyi’s movement and ensure public safety along designated routes.
While the candidate had originally planned to travel via the Mityana Highway, he was rerouted to use Hoima Road. Onyango described how the supporters ignored multiple orders to disperse, leaving security forces no option but to make arrests. The detainees are being held at Wakiso Police Division as investigations into the incident continue.
Police have cautioned all candidates and their followers to stick to approved routes and obey traffic rules to avoid disturbing public order. Meanwhile, the NUP and other opposition camps accused security agencies of applying laws selectively, alleging that supporters of the ruling party have violated regulations undisturbed.
Bobi Wine rejected claims that his movement caused instability and accused security forces of deliberately trying to restrict his campaign. Despite the tensions, he urged his supporters to remain peaceful and insisted his campaign would proceed. The rally in Mityana is part of his broader tour of the Buganda region, where he has pledged to address issues such as land grabbing, youth unemployment, and cultural rights.
