The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has provided clarity on the withholding of the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination results for 176 candidates from St. Gracious Secondary School, attributing it to ongoing review processes amidst suspected examination malpractice allegations. Last week, UNEB released the 2025 UCE results for hundreds of thousands of candidates nationwide, but results from several schools, including St. Gracious SS, were withheld due to concerns over possible malpractice.

Speaking to Kampala Gazette, UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule emphasized that it is premature to conclusively determine whether the school engaged in malpractice. “At this stage, we cannot say for certain that malpractice took place,” Kalule stated, explaining that UNEB examiners identified unusual similarities in candidates’ answers, raising suspicions of external assistance during the examination. “These similarities triggered a red flag, leading to the results being withheld pending further investigation,” she noted.

As part of the established review and hearing process, the school’s management will be formally invited to appear before UNEB to provide an explanation. Kalule could not provide a specific date for the hearing, citing ongoing handling of Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) cases. She urged the school administration to engage parents and candidates, highlighting the importance of emotional support during this period. “We appeal to the school to talk to parents and candidates. This period can be stressful, and we do not want learners to be harmed emotionally or otherwise,” Kalule said.

UNEB reiterates that withholding results does not automatically imply guilt, and schools are afforded an opportunity to defend themselves before any final decision is made. The board has consistently emphasized this stance, ensuring fairness and transparency in its processes.
