Lira, Uganda – The Government of Uganda has publicly confirmed its recognition of Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune as the legitimate Paramount Chief of Lango after officially handing over two vehicles to him at a ceremony held on August 1, 2025, at the Lango Cultural Centre in Lira City.

The vehicles, a Toyota Land Cruiser VXR for the Paramount Chief and a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin for his security detail, were delivered through the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development. Minister Betty Amongi, who led the handover, said the support clearly demonstrated government confidence in Eng. Okune’s authority as the duly recognized Won Nyaci of Lango.

She appealed to all clan leaders to rally behind his leadership, noting that unity is essential for peace and the cultural institution’s development. Amongi also encouraged cultural leaders to promote education, especially by supporting bright learners from disadvantaged families. She further acknowledged the role of Lango Members of Parliament in strengthening cultural structures.

The ceremony attracted clan heads, local officials, and religious leaders from across the region. His Royal Highness Omukuka Jude Mike Mudoma III of Bugisu graced the event, a gesture interpreted as growing collaboration between the two cultural institutions. Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira Diocese blessed the vehicles and prayed for wisdom and protection over the Paramount Chief’s duties.

Prof. Willy Okullo, Prime Minister of Tekwaro Lango, described the handover as a historic moment, noting that it was the first time the state had extended such support to the Lango cultural institution. He said the gesture reflected the government’s trust in the institution’s current leadership.

In his remarks, Eng. Okune expressed deep gratitude to the government and the religious leaders who continue to guide and encourage him. He appreciated the presence of the Omukuka of Bugisu, saying it symbolized unity among the region’s cultural heads.

Rashid Eton, chairperson of the Itogo, called for stronger protection of the Paramount Chief and reported that long-standing misunderstandings among some clan chiefs were being resolved, leading to improved cooperation.

During the event, the Agong Foundation was launched by Margaret Okune, the wife of the Paramount Chief. The foundation aims to empower women, youth, and the elderly through culturally rooted development projects across Lango.

This milestone ceremony highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to cultural institutions and reaffirmed Dr. Okune’s leadership at a time when unity and structured cultural development remain central to the region’s progress.
