Dr. Obote College in Lira has achieved an incredible feat, securing a spot among the top three Ugandan government schools to compete in baseball at the upcoming East African Secondary School Games (FEASSA) in Morogoro, Tanzania. This qualification comes after their impressive third-place finish at the National Secondary Schools Baseball Championship.
What makes this achievement truly remarkable is the speed of their success. The team captain, Ajali Godwin Smith, a Senior Three student, revealed that baseball was only introduced at Dr. Obote College a mere month ago. Despite this, they managed to outperform schools that have been playing the sport for many years, making their journey to the regional championship historic.
James Akona, the school’s Games Teacher, confirmed that only the top three government-aided schools earned the right to represent Uganda. Panyadoli Secondary School took the championship, St. Peter’s Secondary School secured second place, and Dr. Obote College proudly claimed third, earning their ticket to Tanzania. Akona emphasized the school’s strong performance, having previously won the Lira City championship and then becoming regional champions. He encouraged all students to embrace sports, highlighting how dedication can lead to international travel and promising career opportunities.
The school’s baseball coach, Kizito Joseph Otim, expressed strong confidence in his team. He believes Dr. Obote College has what it takes to win the championship trophy in Tanzania and urged other schools to invest more time in developing baseball talent among their students. This inspiring story from Lira showcases how passion and quick learning can lead to extraordinary success on the national and regional stage.
