Hon. Biara Emmanuel Wepukhulu has announced a significant boost in support for orphaned children affected by past landslides. During a recent visit to Yoweri Museveni Primary School in Mbale District, he met with ten students, all survivors from the Bulambuli resettlement camp who tragically lost their parents. These children currently benefit from the Biara Foundation scholarship program, which helps them access education.
Wepukhulu’s visit aimed to check on the students’ academic progress and overall well-being. The school headteacher praised the Foundation for consistently paying tuition fees, which is a huge help. However, the headteacher also highlighted a critical gap: many of the students still lack basic necessities like school uniforms and enough food. This shortage, they explained, severely affects the children’s concentration, confidence, and ultimately, their ability to learn effectively.
In response, Hon. Wepukhulu immediately pledged to mobilize additional resources to meet these urgent needs. He explained that previously, due to limited funds, the foundation could only focus on tuition. However, now that he holds public office, he is confident that the foundation can provide more comprehensive support.
Wepukhulu passionately stated, “Education is one of the strongest foundations for transforming lives and communities. No child should miss an opportunity to learn because of circumstances beyond their control.” Teachers echoed this sentiment, describing the scholarship program as a lifeline that keeps these vulnerable children in school. The students themselves expressed deep gratitude for the visit, saying it gave them renewed hope and motivation to continue their studies.
