Kwania District Halts Boda Boda Association Activities Amidst Deep Leadership Divide, Aiming to Restore Unity and Ensure Riders Benefit from Vital Government Programs

The Kwania District Commercial Department has officially suspended the activities of the Kwania United Motorcyclists Association (KUMCA). This decision comes after a serious leadership conflict that has deeply divided members and led to two separate groups claiming to be the rightful leaders.

The problem started because two different factions within the association held their own elections. Each faction declared its own set of leaders as legitimate. For instance, on March 5, 2026, members elected Geoffrey Oyugi as their chairperson. However, a separate group later held another election on June 10, 2026, choosing Walter Opyene as their leader. These competing elections created deep divisions, with members now split between the two sides.

Emmanuel Felix Okwanga, the Kwania District Commercial Officer, explained that his office had to step in after receiving many complaints and requests for guidance from confused members. He highlighted a major issue: the second election, which chose Walter Opyene, was attended by only 17 members. This is a very small number, considering the association draws its members from all 11 sub-counties in Kwania District. Mr. Okwanga made it clear that the district cannot approve any leadership elected without widespread involvement from members across the entire district.

Looking ahead, Mr. Okwanga indicated that his office plans to first educate members on the proper operation and management of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) before new elections can be arranged. This step is crucial to ensure the association can function properly and fairly. Kwania Deputy Resident District Commissioner Abraham Aturu expressed concern that this ongoing dispute could prevent boda boda riders from accessing crucial government support programs, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the leadership issues for the benefit of all members.
